Frequently asked questions.

Why should I hire an Architect ?

Many people think architects simply draw up floor plans but that’s just the end result of a much deeper process. A good architect adds value by helping you make smart design decisions, secure statutory permissions, reduce construction risks, and stay on budget. They work with you to shape your vision into a practical, creative, and buildable solution.

How do I know if someone is a qualified Architect ?

In the UK, the title “architect” is legally protected and can only be used by someone registered with the ARB (Architects Registration Board), so checking the register is a reliable way to confirm you're working with a qualified professional. My ARB number is 084938C.

What happens during the free zoom consultation with Paperdog Architecture?

During the Zoom consultation, we’ll discuss your vision, budget, and timeline for your home project. I’ll often sketch over your house plans to explore ideas. Then, I’ll explain the process from the initial survey and design to planning, technical phases, and finding a builder. We’ll also review any planning constraints or legal requirements related to your project. The consultation normally takes around 40 minutes.

How long does everything take?

The entire process often takes longer than people expect, so it’s important to start early, especially if you have a target date to get back into your house. From initial design through to planning approval and preparation for construction, you should allow around 16 to 22 weeks, broken down as follows:

  • Survey & Design Stage: 4–6 weeks

  • Planning Application: 8–10 weeks

  • Tendering & Building Regulations: 4–6 weeks

After this, you’ll need time to find a builder, agree on costs, and schedule the work. This can take several months. The build itself varies depending on the size and complexity of the project, and your builder will advise on this. Starting early gives you the best chance of staying on track and avoiding delays. How does the design process work?

At PaperDog Architecture, the design process is personal, collaborative, and tailored to you. From architectural layout to interior details, clients are guided through each stage to help shape a home that not only functions beautifully but feels right too.

It begins with in depth conversations to create a clear, thoughtful brief. Floor plans and 3D visuals are used to explore how spaces flow, how light moves through them, and how materials, views, and interior elements come together. The interior design is considered from the outset, with the option for additional support in selecting finishes, materials, and details so everything feels like it belongs together beautifully. You can find more information on the process here.

How do your fees work?

The fee is determined upfront by estimating how long each part of the project will take, ensuring clear and transparent pricing with no fluctuating percentage based fees.

Do I need to hire anyone else?

You may need to hire additional consultants to support your project. Most projects require a structural engineer, while others might also need a tree consultant, drainage surveyor, or several specialists for complex planning applications. PaperDog Architecture works closely with a network of trusted consultants and can recommend reliable professionals to assist you.
